Cartagena was built in 1533 along a beautiful Caribbean harbor, is surrounded
by 7 mi/11 km of wall. It's very pleasant to stroll down the narrow, cobblestone streets lined with balconies of old Spanish
mansions. In the ocean near Cartagena are sunken Spanish galleons and, for fishing enthusiasts, marlin and sailfish.
Great lobster is available there and on the little islands off the coast. The Rosario Islands lie some 20 mi/32 km offshore,
and although many people see them on a day trip, we feel it's worth it to spend a night or two there. The beaches are magnificent
(Bocagrande is very popular), though better ones can be reached by boat. Equally magnificent are the region's snorkeling and
coral-reef diving. There is a variety of accommodations, but be sure to make reservations long in advance (especially during
